Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative engine optimization (GEO) means preparing content so that AI search and chat assistants understand, use and cite it.

Also known as: GEO · AI search optimization

How it works

More and more people ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI overviews instead of searching the classic way. These systems summarize content and name sources. GEO makes sure your pages are suited for that: clear answers to concrete questions, clean structure, structured data (Schema.org), recognizable authorship and expertise — and technical access for the AI providers’ crawlers.

A practical example

A page answers “What does … cost?” right in the first sentences, lists details in a structured way and names who is responsible for the content. This makes it easier for AI systems to understand and cite it.

What you should know

  • GEO does not replace SEO, it builds on it: good rankings, technical cleanliness and linking remain important.
  • There are no guarantees: nobody can promise you will be named in an AI answer.
  • You can measure it by regularly checking whether and how your brand appears in AI answers.
