Elephas
AI assistant for the Mac that edits text in any app and answers questions about your own documents with source references.
What it does
Elephas is a Mac app with two core features. In “Super Brains” you create project folders with PDFs, Word and Excel files, and notes from Apple Notes, Notion or Obsidian; the app indexes them locally and answers questions about them with references to the passages it used. “Super Command” brings summarising, rewriting, translating and proofreading into any Mac app via a keyboard shortcut. You can choose built-in cloud models from OpenAI and Anthropic, your own API keys, or a model that runs directly on your computer.
Who it suits
Individuals and small teams on the Mac who work heavily with their own material, for instance in law firms, consulting or research, and do not want to upload documents to a cloud knowledge base.
Data protection for businesses
According to the vendor, files stay on your Mac; sync in the Professional and Team plans is end-to-end encrypted. Before cloud requests, the app detects and masks personal data such as names, email addresses and phone numbers; the vendor explicitly calls this detection, not a guarantee. AI requests run on AWS in the US. Sub-processors listed by Elephas include WorkOS, Cloudflare, Supabase, AWS and PostHog (EU). Elephas states that it does not train models on your content. There is no standard data processing agreement; requests go to support@elephas.app. An on-computer model that sends nothing is available on Personal and Professional. Teams get their own plan with shared knowledge folders and roles; SSO and custom contracts go through sales.
Limits
Mac only; a Windows version has been announced. No free plan, only a 7-day trial. Usage is capped by a monthly AI allowance.
