AnythingLLM

Open-source app by Mintplex Labs for chatting with your own documents via RAG – locally on your computer, via Docker or in the cloud.

What it does

AnythingLLM loads your documents into workspaces, turns them into vectors and answers questions based on that content. For the language model you choose either a local model (for example via Ollama or LM Studio) or a cloud provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic or Mistral. On top of that come agents with skills such as web search, web scraping, SQL queries and file access, MCP support, an API, embeddable chat widgets for websites and, in the desktop app, a meeting assistant that transcribes conversations on the device.

Who it suits

Teams and individuals who want to make internal documents searchable without uploading them to a third-party service. The Docker version suits running it on your own server with several users and permissions.

Data protection for businesses

In the desktop app, chats and documents stay on your device according to the vendor; only anonymous telemetry is sent, which you can switch off in the settings. The vendor does not use your content for training – but if you connect a cloud model, that provider’s rules apply. The cloud plans run on isolated AWS instances; the vendor does not name a European region. The vendor does not mention a data processing agreement. If you need full control, host AnythingLLM yourself or ask about the Enterprise plan with on-premise deployment, SSO and role-based access.

Limits

Cloud instances have no built-in model, no MCP support and no custom agents; large PDFs can push them to their limits. Local models need capable hardware.
