Nextcloud Assistant
Open-source AI assistant inside Nextcloud that processes text, files and speech on your own server or through European AI services.
What it does
Nextcloud Assistant is built into Nextcloud Hub. It summarises, rewords and proofreads text and drafts documents, spreadsheets and presentations. In chat you can ask questions about your own files, optionally limited to one folder. It transcribes audio, reads text from images and generates images. In Mail it summarises threads, in Talk it summarises chats and calls; as an agent it can, for example, create calendar events or send Talk messages.
Who it suits
Organisations that already use Nextcloud and want AI where their files live – such as public administrations, law firms or medical practices with strict data sovereignty requirements.
Data protection for businesses
With the local apps and open models such as Qwen or Gemma, all data stays on your server. Alternatively, you can connect European AI services such as IONOS, OVHcloud, plusserver or Deutsche Telekom; according to Nextcloud, they do not use the data for training. If you connect OpenAI or Gemini, inputs go to US providers and their terms apply. Nextcloud does not publish a standard data processing agreement: when you host it yourself, Nextcloud GmbH says it has no access to your data, so such an agreement is not needed. For hosted offerings and external AI services, you agree one with the respective provider. Support for the AI features is part of the Enterprise Ultimate plan.
Limits
Local language models need an NVIDIA GPU with at least 8 GB VRAM or a powerful separate machine. Quality depends heavily on the chosen model. Results can be wrong and should be checked before use.
