Kiro
Development environment from AWS in which AI agents first turn requirements into a design and task list, then write the code.
What it does
Kiro is a development environment based on Code OSS, the open core of VS Code; you can import settings and Open VSX extensions. If you want, Kiro first derives requirements, a technical design and individual tasks from a request, which you review before any code is written. Hooks start agents automatically on events, for example to update tests or documentation. MCP lets you connect external tools, and a command-line version also runs in CI/CD pipelines. Available models include Claude, GPT-5 and Qwen.
Who it suits
Developers and teams who want to plan and build larger features with AI agents and keep the intermediate steps traceable. If you use AWS, you can connect sign-in through IAM Identity Center.
Data protection for businesses
In the free plan and on individual subscriptions with sign-in via GitHub, Google or AWS Builder ID, AWS uses prompts, responses and generated code to improve the service by default; you can turn this off in the settings under “Telemetry and Content”. This content is stored in the USA. With sign-in through IAM Identity Center or an external identity provider, and in the Enterprise plan, this use does not apply and the profile can be hosted in Frankfurt; processing is then spread across several regions within Europe. The AWS terms, which also cover Kiro, include a data processing agreement.
Limits
Billing is based on monthly credits that expire at the end of the month; add-on credits cost extra. The mobile app is only available as an early preview. You still need to review generated code yourself.
