Automated newsletter from blog and shop – with n8n and Listmonk

A workflow that builds a newsletter from blog posts and products of a WordPress shop, creates it as a campaign in Listmonk and sends it at a set time – self-hosted and without assembling anything by hand. Built and tested in a demo shop.

01 · Problem

A regular newsletter with new posts and products brings visitors back to the shop – but it takes time every time: choosing content, putting text and images together, creating the campaign, scheduling the send. The goal was to automate these steps completely, with a fixed HTML template in the shop’s look and on a self-hosted environment.

02 · Solution

A workflow in n8n on a self-hosted Ubuntu server with Docker and Caddy, which also runs local language models via Ollama. It fetches all blog posts via the WordPress REST API and filters them – published only, excluding certain categories; a code node sets the number and order, in the example three randomly chosen posts. It then fetches the products via the WooCommerce REST API and filters them the same way, with freely adjustable filters. Both are merged into HTML content, created as a campaign with a custom newsletter template via the Listmonk API and finally sent to the chosen subscriber list at the set time.

03 · Result

Starting the workflow is all it takes: it chooses the content, Listmonk sends the finished newsletter in the shop template at the scheduled time. Campaigns, opens and clicks remain traceable in Listmonk. Because everything is self-hosted, there are no per-subscriber fees and subscriber data stays on our own server. We also use Listmonk for vona’s own newsletter.
