Noir Editorial: Design as an Attitude

Our design philosophy: reduction, a dark default, clear typography. What “Noir Editorial” means and how it shows on our website.

Design is always a decision, not only about colors and fonts but about values, priorities and what you ask of the viewer. When we call our own design concept “Noir Editorial”, we do not mean an aesthetic you put on or take off at will. We mean an attitude that expresses itself in every decision: what goes? What stays? What deserves attention?

The term combines two worlds of reference. “Noir” brings dark grounding: deep black as the default, not the exception. The dark is not a mood element but a foundation on which everything else builds. “Editorial” brings the demand for typography and content hierarchy: text that is allowed to breathe, headings with weight, spacing as a design tool instead of filler. Together, the two terms describe a style that refuses arbitrariness without becoming heavy.

Reduction as a creative decision

The misunderstanding about minimalism is that it is simple. The opposite is true: it is much easier to add something than to leave something out. Every element that is not there is a decision, and these decisions must be justified, not by fashion or convenience but by the question: what does the viewer need in order to understand and feel what I want to convey?

In practice that means: no decorative elements without function, no color without meaning, no animation without purpose. When we build in a subtle motion, it should convey hierarchy, direct attention or explain the transition between states, not show what is technically possible. This self-restraint is demanding. It is also what makes the work good.

How it shows on our website

  • Dark as the default, light as an option for anyone who prefers it.
  • A fine grid as a quiet background that hints at structure without dominating.
  • A single accent: one blue that marks what is important.
  • Line illustrations in a uniform style, without gradients and stock photos.
  • Two-tone headings: the second part is muted, so weight comes from contrast rather than loudness.

Typography as the primary means of expression

For us, typography is the first instrument, not the last. We work with two typefaces: Inter for text and headings and Roboto Mono for labels and kickers. The combination is not accidental: Inter is clear, very legible and restrained and lets the content speak. The mono typeface sets small, technical accents and structures pages without shouting.

  • Font size as a hierarchy signal, not as decoration
  • Line height and spacing as breathing room for the eye
  • Letter-spacing on labels and kicker texts for clarity
  • Emphasis used sparingly, as accent rather than as style

Noir Editorial is not a style for every assignment. It is our own style, the expression of how we think about quality. On client projects we follow the client’s brand world. The craft behind it, the care, the precision and the respect for the viewer, always stays the same. That is the attitude that does not change.
